"Sometimes you have to step aside to get involved better," says Sulayman Al-Bassam, a Kuwaiti playwright in residence at the Camargo Foundation. Located in Cassis, a charming seaside resort near Marseille (South of France), the Camargo Foundation offers the right time and space to think, create and exchange. Just like the Mediterranean Sea which borders it, this artist and researcher residence promotes the encounter of different cultures, civilizations and artistic practices. By encouraging interdisciplinary approaches, from arts to social sciences, the Foundation seeks also to strengthen the links between research and creation.
The place is made up of a tangle of Provençal buildings and gardens perched above the sea, exclusively dedicated to welcoming artists and researchers from all over the world. Founded in 1967 by American artist and philanthropist Jerome Hill, this residency consists of four buildings, thirteen apartments, an artist's studio, a studio for composers, two Mediterranean gardens and terraces offering a breath-taking view of the port of Cassis and the Cap Canaillle. Its open-air amphitheatre regularly hosts concerts and other festivals of literature.
At the Camargo Foundation, the key word is openness. If the anchoring is Mediterranean, horizons are resolutely international.
