The Van Eyck is a multidisciplinary post-academic institute for artistic talent development that furthers experiment, research, production, collaboration and exchange.
The academy attracts artists, designers (fashion, graphic, food, etc.), curators, (landscape) architects and writers from all around the world. They are provided with the space and time they need to develop their artistic practice. The Van Eyck offers its participants their own studio, studio visits by renowned art professionals and the expertise of the labs (wood, metal, printing, photography/new media, a library, a food lab).
Some 40 participants enroll at the Jan van Eyck Academie annually, generally for a period of 6 to 12 months. A worldwide call for applications is issued each year. The selection committee chooses new participants on the basis of project plans and documentation submitted by the candidates. The selected artists have in common an inquisitive, open and engaged attitude. The Jan van Eyck Academie offers them a multiform environment that challenges and nourishes their talents. The multidisciplinary character of the academy appeals to the participant's artistic and intellectual versatility, and enables them to deepen and ramify their talents and skills in breadth as well as in depth.
The Van Eyck believes art is strengthened in its relation to the world, and vice versa. To connect to the outside world, the departments Mirror, the Lab for Nature Research and the Hubert van Eyck Academie were established. These departments stimulate interaction between the in-house expertise and external parties.
Mirror is the Jan van Eyck's project agency. It concretizes the internationally oriented ambitions of the artists, and unlocks the creative potential of the academy in undertaking external commissions.
The Lab for Nature Research invites artists and associated researchers to consider 'Nature' in relation to social, political and ecological developments, both on a local and on an international level.
The Hubert van Eyck Academie was established with the aim of connecting the Jan van Eyck Academie with its surrounding knowledge institutes. Art, science and education are united here. The Hubert van Eyck Academie acts as a partner in national and international projects, as is the {ca se} in the project Be Mobile-Create Together!
